In view of the latest research in psychology, we should update the old saying that the eyes are the windows of the soul and replace “eyes” with “Facebook states”. A Swedish study concludes that social network updates in this reveal whether the user has the personality traits of narcissism, psychopathy and Machiavellianism, which confirms the close relationship between the subconscious and language, also evident through the pixels.
The team of scientists from the University of Sverker Sikström Lund (Sweden) analyzed 304 statements published by users after them fill out a personality questionnaire. The results showed that those who had a kindred nature to the most likely “dark triad of personality” (narcissism, psychopathy and Machiavellianism) were writing negative and eccentrically, and frequently mentioned pornography, butchers, prostitution and decapitation . The number of people in the network and the frequency of publication also acted as indicators of such negative behavior patterns.
The social network Facebook provides the individual complete control over how it is presented to others and the impressions that cause them, which is a perfect breeding ground for neurotic behavior. The “dark triad” is characterized by a clear tendency to self, emotional coldness, duplicity and aggression, qualities that hurt long-term social relationships.
The authors admit that they can not diagnose the personality of an individual taking his board just Facebook. However, their status updates are a more reliable indicator of sociability that their number of friends in the social network.
